How did you choose which cities to stop at?
Some of these cities were pitched to me enthusiastically by passionate local booksellers who wanted to host a TSS event for their communities. Others were pitched out to based on the market or the proximity to me as an author for logistics. And others still were because you as readers suggested them to me as some of your personal favourite bookstores. If there is one thing that I consider Taylor Swift Style to be, it's a love letter. To fashion, of course. To Taylor and her music, naturally. But also to you as a community for making this highly niche topic something that a publisher realised people would have an appetite for.
There is no TSS without people like you who are kind, thoughtful, insightful, curious, excited, and unafraid of the deep dive. You want more from conversations and connection and emotions. You crave intensity and thoroughness and thoughtfulness. You want to magnify the small because it’s those tiny microscopic details that make up that shattered mosaic of our hearts. It’s why we’re Taylor Swift fans, right? I so hope that at least one of you sees a bookstore that you love and have fond memories of. And I’m so excited at the chance to make new ones together on this tour.
Will there be any pre-order incentives or event exclusives?
I’m currently working up some cutie in person goodies as a ‘thanks’ for bringing your physical selves to purchase a copy of TSS at one of these beloved indies. Bookmarks? Custom friendship bracelets? Perhaps even enamel pins? Would love your ideas, too!
Will signed books also be personalized?
Yes! If you ask for your book to be personalized it will be.
Can I bring a pre-ordered copy of the book from another store?
First of all thank you so much for contributing to the pre-orders of TSS! They really do mean everything when it comes to determining the success of a book. Especially because pre-orders are pivotal to informing best seller lists (you might know of a really big one that rhymes with Blue Pork Shrines ... and oh it would be quite a dream to be on that one wouldn't it!). Secondly, it's my understanding that bringing pre-ordered copies of a book is okay to do but to make sure I'd check in with the bookstore in question as I'm sure ideally they'd love a copy to be pre-ordered / purchased from them as an indie seller. But I've also heard that signed copies of books (especially pretty coffee table ones) make great gifts for the holidays ... ;)
What does “in conversation with” mean?
Book events typically take the form of three event structures, though there are certainly others that exist or are a hybrid of the ones I’m about to mention. One is a straight signing where an author sits at a table and accepts books to be signed and often also personalised on a 1:1 basis with a reader. Another is a live reading and Q&A session format where an author might read aloud a select passage from their book or deliver a short talk highlighting some of the key themes or topics from their book before accepting audience questions and proceeding into a signing. And a third is where an author will appear with someone else - most often another author within the same genre or is within the author’s social circle - to talk about pretty much anything in the vein of a live podcast interview or conversation. These often also add on a Q&A session at the end before moving into the signing portion of the event.
I am so lucky that I will be joined by some incredible people I am a huge fan of and who I think are so aligned with the TSS audience. The following conversation partners I’m excited to be in the presence of are all passionate, intelligent, and thoughtful admirers of Taylor and her work. I can’t wait to chat with them all about this book!
In … Chicago (Naperville, IL) I’ll be joined by Kate Kennedy, author of One In A Millennial and host of the Be There In Five podcast. I love Kate’s approach to pop culture and how she is such a champion and nurturer of the sanctity of girlhood and female friendships. The way she talks about female interests with such care and comedy speaks to my soul. There are so few online spaces that have carved out such an obvious love for the long-form that is both kind, wildly specific and detailed, as well as being funny.
In … Kansas City I’ll be joined by Melody Rowell, producer of the Culture Study podcast hosted by Anne Helen Petersen. Melody is such a whip-smart individual, incredibly talented, and her work on Culture Study is a resumé stamp for how connected she is to the pop culture landscape and her ability to critically analyse it in such an intelligent and thoughtful way.
In … New York City I’ll be joined by Olivia Muenter, author of Such A Bad Influence and co-host of the Bad On Paper podcast. Olivia literally talks about books and the temperamental nature of our relationship with the written word as part of her living. More importantly, like me, she has loved Taylor Swift’s music for over half her life. Olivia writes with so much feeling and sensitivity (I think it’s the Pisces in her) about so many things and she really gets to the heart of how and why Taylor’s lyrics are so emotionally resonant.
In … Los Angeles I’ll be joined by Elizabeth Holmes, author of HRH: So Many Thoughts On Royal Style. I have admired Elizabeth for years and have always been flattered any time someone has described TSS as even fractionally similar to the kind and thoughtful (or perhaps thought full) place she has made her corner of the internet through her So Many Thoughts series on the style of the British Royal Family. Elizabeth is a longtime journalist and celebrator of the power of fashion as a communication tool. I love how our respective venn diagrams overlap when it comes to representing trustworthy reporting and providing critical, nuanced opinions about how we use style to speak for us.
Lastly in … Nashville I’ll be joined by Bryan West, dedicated Taylor Swift reporter for USA Today and The Tennessean. Bryan has truly embedded himself into the Swiftie community over the last year as he’s worked to document Taylor’s career and of course provide coverage of the Eras Tour as it unfolds. He’s supported TSS since Day 1 on the job and has been a fantastic resource of updates on all things Taylor on a national scale. He’s an incredible example of Taylor’s cultural impact that analysing and reporting on her transcendent career is career-worthy on its own.
Will there be any additional dates?
As Taylor Swift herself might put it “🔜🇨🇦” 😉
This final list of 20 comprises the entirety of the tour. It’s been such a whirlwind and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to say “hello” and “thank you” to so many of you in person.
I truly hope to see as many of you as possible in person at one of these events!
Can’t wait for your European tour!
Attention all book lovers!
We're working on a project called "Serendipity Ulysses," where we’re offering ad space within the text of "Ulysses" itself—a fun way to blend literature with digital media. We’d love for you to add your link and join in! Check it out: https://sulysses1.substack.com/p/serendipity-ulysses-in-a-nutshell
If you’re interested in writing about it, we’d be thrilled to feature your Substack post on our project’s resource page. Let us know what you think!
